5G core network (5GCN)

Unlike LTE which focused more on hardware and devices, 5GCN adds greater flexibility of service-based architecture. This allows 5GCN to be deployed on the cloud such as AWS. So instead of talking about nodes like MME, NE40, now the discussion will be what functions the operator needs in order to achieve its business target.

Shown below is 5GCN service-based architecture

Similarities can be drawn with LTE. For instance the AMF and SMF take the role of MME, the UPF takes the role of P-GW and S-GW in LTE.
